Youth Book contest

The Midwest Writing Center’s publishing arm, MWC Press, and 918studio press are partnering on a youth (18 and under) book contest. Submissions are due by August 31, 2019; winners may be chosen (assuming we receive enough quality submissions) on or before September 15, 2019. If you’re interested, please read this page in its entirety and follow the contest guidelines exactly to ensure your eligibility to win.

The winner will receive:

  • Publication package from 918studio press effective for 2 years from publication or whenever author cancels, whichever occurs first
  • Twenty-five (25) copies of the book to sell as desired
  • Launch party (including a reading, light refreshments, and invitations emailed to the list you provide; selling your own books, keeping your profits) on a mutually agreeable date in or about April 2020, at Midwest Writing Center
  • Royalty split of online sales 1/3 918, 1/3 MWC Press, 1/3 Author
  • Discount on additional original prints or reprints equal to printing cost + 20% (estimated at $4-4.50 per book, depending on length)
  • Press release online and to local media announcing publication and launch party

Contest Guidelines

  • Open to residents of Iowa and Illinois in two age groups: 15 to 18 years old and 14 years old and under
  • Manuscript Length: at least 25,000 words or 100 pages 8 ½” x 11” double spaced; no more than 75,000 words or 300 pages 8 ½” x 11” double-spaced
  • Manuscript must be an original, previously unpublished book written by the contestant, and can be fiction, memoir or other creative non-fiction, non-fiction. No short story or poetry collections.
  • Manuscript must be edited and ready to go as only light editing and proofreading will be provided
  • Submit to info@918studiopress with the information below included in the body of the email and the entire manuscript attached as a PDF document (though the document published will need to be in Word with any/all acknowledgments, dedications, author bio, etc. included):
    • Title of Work
    • Word and/or Page Count
    • Name
    • Address
    • Phone number
    • Age category: 15 to 18 OR 14 and Under
    • 200-350 word description
    • Less than 75-word blurb (See Wordsy Woman’s YouTube video at you need help)
    • 150-300 word author bio
    • Cover suggestion/wishes if any
    • It must be ready to go as only light editing/proofreading will be provided
    • Must obtain and show proof of any permissions needed
    • Acknowledgment of understanding your parent/guardian will need to sign the agreement on your behalf and you have permission to enter the contest
    • Acknowledgment of understanding the launch party will be held at MWC at the Rock Island Library, that you are willing to travel, and have reasonable belief your friends/family will travel to attend as those are the most likely launch party attendees
